Cool Science 2016

Firstly, a BIG thankyou to everyone for the support of Cool Science so far. After a fantastic inaugural award-winning year in 2015, the planning and further support for 2016, including a retailer, is coming together nicely.

2015 was an amazing first year for Cool Science. It marked the beginning of a growing initiative to broaden the appeal and awareness of our industry and its technology, to try and help to tackle the widely acknowledged skills gap in the wider engineering sector. Receiving an RAC Cooling Industry Award for the collaboration effort of this initiative was fantastic, in recognising and raising awareness of what we’re trying to achieve.

Last March, Cool Science took part in ‘The Big Bang (Young Scientists and Engineers) Fair, the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK (www.thebigbangfair.co.uk). This year we’re going again – to the NEC, Birmingham on 16-19 March 2016. The Big Bang Fair is an award-winning combination of exciting theatre shows, interactive workshops and exhibits, as well careers information from STEM professionals.
As The Big Bang organisers put it “We aim to show young people (primarily aged 7-19) the exciting and rewarding opportunities out there for them with the right experience and qualifications, by bringing classroom learning to life”.

Refrigeration was a field which the organisers working group were very pleased to have at the event; they recognised it’s an essential part of modern society, an interesting sector which covers several parts of the curriculum, and widely unrecognised, much like the other STEM sectors who attend the event.

Last year’s Big Bang Fair was a huge success, from the organisers choosing to do the press shoot for the entire event at the Cool Science stand, to other exhibitors being amazed at the quality of the stand and its activities given it was our first year. Industry-ambassador volunteers on the stand also gave a staggering 12,000+ Cool Science stickers to the young people at the event. Cool Science also had fantastic press coverage, including CBBC Newsround and a visit from the then Science Minister Greg Clarke MP.

Other educational/STEM events around the UK have asked for Cool Science to attend their events too, a good yardstick for the recognition of the value of Cool Science as an initiative.

To achieve these next steps in the roadmap of Cool Science, funding is a key factor. The long term goals of Cool Science is to attend more regional events, and take part in Engineering UK’s ‘Tomorrows Engineers’ schools program. Support from every corner of our industry is needed to enable this initiative to grow into these areas and reach it’s full potential. Please get in touch to discuss how you can support and get involved to become a ‘Youth Engagement Supporter’ in our industry (yes@coolscience.org.uk).

We also are working on Educational Teaching Resources, which will be promoted through the Guardian Teachers Network.

We are looking for young people in our industry to volunteer to be part of Cool Science at this year’s Big Bang Fair as Young Cooling Industry Industry Ambassadors, to talk enthusiastically to other young people visiting the Fair about their career and training. We will be holding a workshop for all volunteers to attend in February. Please get in touch to find out more (info@coolscience.org.uk).
